Safety work on the Barton Highway and Yass Valley Way, from Thursday 30 April

The Australian and NSW governments are investing in the Barton Highway upgrade to improve safety and journey reliability for all road users, ease congestion and boost freight productivity.

Transport for NSW will be installing three permanent electronic message boards and six closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the Barton Highway and Yass Valley Way as part of the Barton Highway upgrade.

Why are we doing this work?
The message boards will share important road safety information and will keep motorists informed of changes to traffic conditions, such as road works, unexpected highway closures or fog warnings. The six CCTV cameras will be used by our Traffic Operations team to monitor traffic conditions, including checking for any delays or changes to conditions. This information can then be relayed to motorists via the new electronic message boards and will help you to plan your journey.

To minimise impacts to motorists, the project team will work in stages across four locations on the Barton Highway from the ACT border to the Hume Highway interchange, and at two locations on Yass Valley Way.

Work will be carried out on the Barton Highway at the following locations:

  • Northbound lane near Gladstone Street, Hall
  • Southbound lane near Nanima Road, Wallaroo
  • Northbound lane near Murrumbateman Road, Murrumbateman
  • Southbound lane near Lucernvale Road, Yass.

Work will be carried out on Yass Valley Way at the following locations:

  • Near Rayner Place and Glover Drive, Yass
  • Barton Highway overpass, Yass.

How will work affect you?
Work will start on Thursday 30 April and is expected to take about two months to complete, weather permitting. Work will be carried out from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm. At times, single lane closures will be required for the safety for motorists and workers. To minimise delays, there will be no closures during the morning and afternoon peak periods. Lane closures will only be in place between 9.30am and 3pm. The work will involve the use of machinery which generates some noise. We will make every effort to minimise noise by turning off machinery and vehicles when not in use. Property access will be maintained at all times.

Traffic changes:
Some lane closures will be required and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place during work hours for the safety of motorists and workers. Short delays may be expected due to reduced speed limits and lane closures. We suggest allowing an extra 5 minutes if travelling through these work areas. Motorists are advised to keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs. For the latest traffic updates, you can call 132 701, visit livetraffic.com or download the Live Traffic NSW app.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during this important work.
